FaceApp - despite the controversy there's a reason it is popular!

FaceApp is high in the ranks of then Google Play store at the moment, and despite the controversies of white-washing, there's a reason. In short, it's really fun, simple to use and an all round well-designed app that has some great filters and effects.
The purpose of the app is simple - simply load it up, take a photo, play with a few dials and then before you know it there's your desired outcome - whether it be a new gender, a younger self, an older self - etc. You name it - FaceApp can do it.
Check it out today, it's one of those apps well worth downloading and spending a few minutes with!

TripAdvisor

Today's app of the day is TripAdvisor.

After close to a month of down time, Droid App of the Day is officially back online. Thanks to anyone who is returning to the site. So why the break? Well, other than the obvious struggle to find time over the festive season, I also took a three week trip to Vietnam and Cambodia. With free wi-fi practically everywhere, my Desire HD was very useful, and I managed to come across a few apps that were very handy for my travels.

Considering this, to get the ball rolling, the first app of the day for 2012 is TripAdvisor. Anyone who travels regularly, or books a lot of online hotels, will probably already be familiar with TripAdvisor. It is essentially a user generated ranking / review site of everything to do, see, eat and drink within practically every city on earth worth travelling to.

Although I was travelling with my Lonely Planet, in cities of over 8 million people there is only so much ground a few pages on a city can cover. Also, with the pace many Vietnamese cities are growing, it does not take long for plenty of new restaurants or hotels to appear that might not appear in a slightly dated version of  more traditional travel guides.

Through using the  TripAdvisor app I managed to cut the wheat from the chaff in terms of restaurants and attractions in almost every city I went to. Interestingly, a few times Lonely Planet recommended an attraction in lieu of other attractions,  but then after reviewing TripAdvisor I saw a vastly different rating of things to do. On comparison of the two I often found myself agreeing with the ranking of things to do on TripAdvisor more so than on Lonely Planet. This is not saying more traditional travel books do not have their place, but social ranking sites like TripAdvisor, although open to manipulation, tend to provide a collective view of the things to see, eat and do in a city, rather than the view of one very well traveled writer.

So the app itself? For me it ticked all the boxes. Sure, it is very similar to mobile site for Trip Advisor, but that seems to becoming a trend with many apps these days and it does not bother me. I will leave the feature list for the developers:
Search for hotels, restaurants, cheap flights & more - wherever you are.Plan and have the perfect trip! Find the best places to eat, sleep, and play.• Browse 50+ million reviews & opinions• Write a review of any hotel, restaurant or attraction• View photos• See what's nearby with Near Me Now• Get advice in travel forums• My Saves: save hotel, restaurant, and attraction pages so you can find them again easily• Virtual tour: see a street-level view of your destination, plus nearby hotels, restaurants, and more
So, if you travel a lot for either work or play, or book a lot of hotels, then  TripAdvisor is worth checking out. You will find great user reviews of all the major attractions in a city, but also, manage to find a few more obscure attractions, restaurants or bars that might not make it into the pages of a slightly dated travel book.

Wish - shopping made fun - and easy - and cheap!

These days sites like Amazon or eBay make buying and selling online quick and easy. Unfortunately, sometimes the sheer breadth of products available (everything on earth!) makes it difficult to impulse buy or get the same experience one haves when wandering around a shop or past windows. Luckily, apps now exist to replicate that experience.

The best of the lot is Wish - which has the tagline 'shopping made fun' which could not be more true! When opening the app there are lots of categories to choose from, allowing you to pick the type of products you want to browse and going from there. Buying and checking out is only ever a few clicks away and if you are not careful you will very quickly load up on more products than you need!

I've launched sites that help out with buying cheap gadgets in the past, and it was heavily inspired by apps such as Wish which really allow someone to sit back and take pleasure in the shopping experience again! Download Wish now!

Cosmic Cow

Today's app of the day is Cosmic Cow.

"Endless" games are very in vogue at the moment, whether it be endless running, endless jumping or endless flapping, there are plenty of ways to get unlimited, and challenging gaming fixes. That doesn't mean that there aren't great new games being created in the genre, with Cosmic Cow being one such example.

In essence, Cosmic Cow combines two great styles of game play, one being a side scrolling endless-type game, and the other being the classic side scrolling space ship shooter, popularised in numerous incarnations on 8 and 16 bit consoles of decades past. As a "cosmic cow" (can't help but love it!), the player has to navigate through space, shooting or dodging asteroids and other attacking spaceships. The cow can collect a variety of objects to earn points - though mainly interesting foods that just happen to be floating through space. As points are accumulated, the player can also collect coins to spend on a v…
