Landrule

Today's app of the day is Landrule.

One thing I find, is that after starting this site, friends often suggest apps to me for review. Often, I have already recommended such apps, and other times they are rubbish, but every now and then a friend dishes up an absolute Jem (deliberate spelling mistake - Cheers Jem).  Landrule is one such app, that without a suggestion from a friend, would have probably gone un-noticed for many months, or even years, to come.

This is a great shame, because Landrule is one of the best android apps I have played in a while. I say this though, with a bit of a disclaimer. Really, what I mean is -  Landrule is one of the best apps you will play on android ..... if you are a fan of Risk (yep, you heard me right, the old fashioned, roll the dice, territory conquering board game).

In short,  Landrule is Risk, translated to your mobile device. You can play locally, either against computer AI or friends, but the real heart of the game is the online multi-player. Set up a new game, invite a few friends and before you know it you will have a great strategic game on your hands, far outclassing and weighing anything that Zynga (of words with friends fame) can produce.

There are plenty of game maps, time limits and player numbers to join, and if you cant find one you like, after starting your own it wont take long for a lobby to be filled and a game to be underway. The interface is extremely simply, yet provides all the functionality that is to be expected and the actual on game graphics, whilst plain, make it easy to see what is going on . Additionally, the notifications work brilliantly (something many android apps still seem to struggle with), allowing you to easily keep track on when it is time to make a move.

All in all, Landrule is a great app, which I can see myself sinking plenty of time into over the coming weeks / months / years. If you haven't already downloaded  Landrule, even if it doesn't sound like your sort of game, take a Risk (sorry for the pun) and see what you think!

In the words of the developer:

Landrule is a turn-based strategy game for Android. Similar to Age of Conquest and Risk.
You can play in a single-player mode, or against thousands of others in online multiplayer mode. A new pass-and-play mode lets you play against others locally on a single device!
New features on the way, making the classic Risk game more fun.
Maps include the classic Risk earth map, as well as a modified Antarctica map, and more.

Pro-tips:
+You can make in-game animations faster by going into Settings -> Animation Speed. Pick "Lightning" for the fastest experience.
+If playing multiplayer, consider turning on push notifications. You'll get a notification when it's your turn to go. Do this by going to the Multiplayer page -> Turn Notifications -> and then turn them on there (android 2.2 and greater required).
