Microsoft is actually a great Android developer - 'To-Do' is another reason why!

It may seem suprising to some, but Microsoft is actually a fantastic Android developer. In fact, I'd go as far to saythat their app offerings for Android are far superior to than their offerings for the Windows App store. For starters the full suite of Microsoft Office apps are great, as is one drive and one note, and the Arrow App Launcher is actually one of the best custom android skins available (seriously - check it out!).

To round this out, over the last few days Microsoft has released 'To-Do' which as you've guessed it - is a to-do list. It really could not be simpler - the app allows the creation of lists and then as part of each list allows tasks and items to be added.

The design is simple and clean, and a nice move away from the boxy interface design that still dominates some of the earlier Windows apps for android. It's fast, lightweight, cloud based (of course) and has a widget - so there is not much more you could ask for!

Of course there is lots of co…

Cognito (Ultimate)

Today's app of the day is Cognito.

Cognito is a great new Android application in a long wave of applications that have gradually filtered onto the market since Apple released Siri with the iPhone 4. With Google now having released its own take on voice recognition assistants, it really takes something a little special to set a new comer to the field apart from the competition. Luckily, Cognito has that something special.

So what is it that sets Cognito apart from other voice controlled assistances? In short, Cognito is truly hands free - in that it does not require the push of a button to commence recognition. I have found that when using other voice software, doing something simple still requires multiple taps and swipes and touching the screen. Cognito looks to change all this by being a truly hands free solution.

It achieves this by having the voice detection component running silently in the background, only switching on when noise is detected, and then intelligently determining whether or not it was actually a control issues by the device user.

After booting up, the software will give a very simple but informative voice guided tour of the application. From there, users can simply press a button to permanently turn on voice recognition and get started without any further configuration, but more advanced users can link in their social network accounts or read about some of the more advanced features on a handy help page.

From there your phone can simply be used as usual, however when you do want to undertake some voice tasks, simply start talking. Cognito will detect your voice and things will progress from there with Cognito responding to your requests. I find this will be a particularly useful feature when driving, making it truly possible to stay focused on the road without having to touch a device.

Have a read of the developers description below to see the full range of controls that can be issued to Cognito. All in all, this is an excellent Android app - well worth the download!

In the words of the developer:

Cognito is the ultimate hands-free continuous voice recognition mobile assistant
"An excellent app - Editor's Choice from DroidAppOfTheDay.com"
For less than the price of an espresso drink you can text, phone, tweet & Facebook friends, get movies listings, sports scores, news headlines, set reminders, remember things, and more, ... hands-free just using your voice!
Share your ideas, ask questions, or report problems by sending an email tocognito@jazzitouch.com . We're here for you!
Cognito provides the benefits of continuous speech recognition and synthetic speech to do things for you and provide information even while your screen has dimmed or is in sleep mode. It's the only truly hands-free and eyes-free voice recognition assistant on Android, making it ideal for use on the road, in bright places where you can't see your screen, and wherever and whenever your hands are tied.
What makes Cognito different from other voice assistant apps like Siri, Vlingo, Assistant, and Eva, is Cognito never requires that you tap an icon to speak, make screen selections, or look at the screen to see results. It simply tells you. Cognito continually listens for your voice, responds when you've spoken, and learns and improves upon recognizing your voice.
Say things like "Where's the nearest grocery store?", "What were yesterday's baseball scores?", "Text Ben: I'll be there in 5 minutes.", "What are the top movies?", "Call Fred", or "Remind me to pick up my laundry at 4 o'clock today." without ever having to press a button or look at your phone.
With Cognito you can hands-free:
Send texts
Place phone calls
Find nearby restaurants, grocery stores, and other places
Set reminders
Remember things
Make appointments or create tasks
Get baseball, basketball and hockey scores
Movie show times and theaters
Local weather or in any city

News headlines
Airline flight information
The location of your car or anything you designate
Get word definitions
Convert units of measure or currency

Get the time or date
Hear jokes or wise sayings
... and more features are being added all the time.
Cognito sounds best with natural voices such as those offered by IVONA. See our FAQ link at http://jazzitouch.com/Cognito/ to learn how to download and install synthetic speech engines for your phone.

Wish - shopping made fun - and easy - and cheap!

These days sites like Amazon or eBay make buying and selling online quick and easy. Unfortunately, sometimes the sheer breadth of products available (everything on earth!) makes it difficult to impulse buy or get the same experience one haves when wandering around a shop or past windows. Luckily, apps now exist to replicate that experience.

The best of the lot is Wish - which has the tagline 'shopping made fun' which could not be more true! When opening the app there are lots of categories to choose from, allowing you to pick the type of products you want to browse and going from there. Buying and checking out is only ever a few clicks away and if you are not careful you will very quickly load up on more products than you need!

I've launched sites that help out with buying cheap gadgets in the past, and it was heavily inspired by apps such as Wish which really allow someone to sit back and take pleasure in the shopping experience again! Download Wish now!

Hearthstone - better late than never - the best android card game!

I'll cut to it - Hearthstone is one of the best games you can get for your Android device - in fact, I am sure that plenty of people would argue it is one of the best games you can get at all - even on a PC! With that in mind, there's no reason not to jump in now and start experiencing this great offering from Blizzard.
The gameplay is turn based card strategy, think Magic the Gathering, but fare more simple. Every turn the number of points you have to spend on cards increases, so it means that games start quite evenly handed but can escalate quickly, especially when more experienced players know how to string together the abilities of their cards.
The objective is to eliminate the health of your opponent - and once you succeed the victory is entirely satisfying, with some truly fantastic sounds and effects that drive home the sense of achievement. This is of course a free to play game, and it is possible to spend real world money in the store but it is not required to have …
