Smart Tools

Today’s app of the day is Smart Tools.

Smart Tools is the Swiss-army-knife of android apps, providing a number of great tools for mobile
users. Included under the hood are roughly nine separate apps, allowing to you measure length and
angles, distances, direction (compasses) and sound and vibration.

What makes Smart Tools unique is the smart way it utilises your smart phones camera. With the
distance measurer for example, you simply turn on your camera, aim at a target, and using basic
geometry, your phone will tell you the distance to that object.

Other interesting apps include a vibration tester (allegedly the force on my desk by my keyboard
typing is equivalent to a category 1 earthquake) and a decibel counter (my typing is equivalent to a
Busy street or an alarm clock at 80dB!), as well as a metal detector.

All in all, Smart Tools is a great utility to have installed on your device, which will likely come in handy when you least expect it!

In the words of the developer:

You can measure length, angle, distance, height, direction, metal, sound ...
Smart Tools is a toolbox of a collection of 1-5 series.
It includes 5 Pro versions that have 15 tools. In a word, All-in-One.
Part 1. Length, Angle, Slope, Level : Smart Ruler Pro
Part 2. Distance, Height, Width, Area : Smart Measure Pro
Part 3. Compass, Metal detector, GPS : Smart Compass Pro
Part 4. Sound level meter, Vibrometer : Sound Meter Pro
Part 5. Flashlight : Smart Light Pro

For more information, see the manual for each of the apps, see the Youtube video and visit the blog. http://androidboy1.blogspot.com/
I know that several phones cannot turn on LED light. I'll support them one by one.
Even more tools will be added soon. The next is Speed Gun, ... etc.
Do you want to get more tools and features? Please send an email. I'll reply to it ASAP. I hope my apps are useful to your Smart Life.
Thanks.

50,000 visitors and counting - Thanks!

It seems that it is a popular trend for blogs to celebrate important milestones. In keeping this tradition alive, Droid App of the Day is celebrating it's 50,000th visitor today (50,093 at the time of writing). Not bad considering Droid App of the Day only went live on 4 October 2011.

Today, instead of recommending a new single app, I will break with tradition and suggest two great older apps, to help you keep updated with what is available on Android Play. Download these and you will never be short of new  things to do on your Android device.

  1. The first app I recommend is the official Droid App of the Day Android application You can read a detailed description here.
  2. The second app I recommend is BAM: Best Android Market. You can read a detailed description here.
Both apps a free in Android Play (the new name for the Android Market).

Five great free android apps – Andalytics, Scramble with Friends, Angry Birds in Space, Google Tasks Organizer and Go Locker

As is becoming a trend, I had a busy weekend and did not recommend any apps. Accordingly, here are five in a single hit!

Andlytics

Today’s first app of the day is Andlytics.

Andlytics is a great app for anyone who publishes to the android market (i.e. myself – through the official Droid App of the Day and Top of The Web applications). If you do have an app in the market, then it is useful to be able to easily check how many downloads you get over a particular time period, plus how many of those users actually keep the app installed on their device (which is often a disappointing statistic!)

In addition, Andlytics is a great way to keep track of comments and star rankings for apps, with this quickly accessible with the click of a finger. Finally, Andlytics features AdMob integration, allowing you to easily keep track of how much is being earned from in-app advertising.

All in all, if you are an android publisher and want quick, on-the-go access to your publishing stats, then Andlytics is for you.

In the words of the developer:

Track your Android app's statistics.
twitter.com/andlytics

Andlytics tracks app statistics for ratings, daily downloads, total downloads and active installs. Android Developers can view app comments in all languages and AdMob statistics for revenue, request and impressions.
This is a Android developer tool for app tracking, only useful if you have published applications on the Android Market and access to the Android Market Developer Console.
Supports auto sync of app stats with your android developer account. Statistics data can be exported to sdcard (pro only) and you can configure notifications for comments, ratings and downloads (also pro only). AdMob accounts will be managed by the Android account manager.
Please notice that Google doesn't provide a stable API to get download and rating stats. Therefore Andlytics might not work properly if something changes in the Android Market. In that case please be patient while we try to catch up with the changes.
This app is not related to Google in any way.
Please report errors by mail or by using the in-app feedback form.

 Scramble with Friends

Today’s second app of the day is Scramble with Friends.

Scramble with Friends is brought to you by the folks over at Zynga, that same motley crew that has brought the android community Hanging with friends, Words with Friends, Zynga Poker, and more recently, acquired Draw Something for a reportedly cool $200 million.

Obviously not being content with its current portfolio, Zynga has released Scramble with Friends. If you have played Hanging with friends or Words with Friends then you will feel right at home with Scramble (I am sick of writing “with friends”), as the interfaces, connectivity and general “vibes” are identical.

This time round, Zynga presents a turn based game of Boggle, which works brilliantly for the turn based competitive game play. In short, players take it in turn to find as many words as possible by connecting letters available in a square grid. It is essentially a find a word, without being presented with a word list, and instead of words having to be straight, they can crawl around the grid in any manner, as long as all letters are connected (including diagonally).

As with all Zynga apps, Scramble is presented brilliantly, and integrates smoothly with Facebook, making it a breeze to find friends to compete with. I’m only a few games into my Scramble experience, but I think it will quickly replace Words with Friends as my “go-to” Zynga game, and far surpasses Hanging with Friends for sheer enjoyability (if that is even a word). If you have a phone, you should get this app!

In the words of the developer:

Scramble With Friends™ - The fast, fun word-finding game everyone's playing!
The wait is over! The hottest new word game has arrived on Android, with all new features to enjoy with your friends on Android or iOS devices!

Scramble With Friends™ joins the world's most popular word-game franchise...if you like Words With Friends™ and Hanging With Friends™, then you’ll love the newest addiction for wordies!

Scramble With Friends™ is the fast, fun game of finding words in a jumbled grid. Quickly slide your finger over adjacent letters to form words forwards, backwards, sideways...any way you can!

Download Scramble With Friends™ Free to start playing today and join the millions of other players worldwide in Zynga’s newest must-have app!

Features in Scramble With Friends™:
★ A fast-paced, exciting new word game from the makers of Words With Friends™!

Angry Birds in Space

Today’s third app of the day is  Angry Birds in Space.

Angry Birds in space is a big release for Rovio, as not only is it the first Angry Birds release in quite some time, but also because introduces a number of new game play and puzzle elements to the classic Angry Birds formula.

The premise is the same as all other games in the Angry Birds series, but this time our feathered friends are in... you guessed it... space. This introduces the angry birds world, with was so reliant on gravity, to a gravity-less environment. In short, if you shoot your bird into the dark voids of space, it will keep going until it hits something. Of course, this would make for a rather dull game, so Rovio has introduced land masses (planets essentially), that all have their own gravitational fields.

It is this new use of gravity that fundamentally changes the way Angry Birds Space is played. No longer is it simply a matter of shooting left to right in an ark. Instead, players can now shoot downwards right, watch their bird get caught in the gravitational pull of one planet, let it float around in orbit for 90 degrees, tap the screen and separate the bird into three, then watch those three new birds fly out of orbit, across the void of space, only to be caught by the gravitational pull of another planet.

When this is combined with asteroids, TNT, pigs floating in bubbles and the standard Angry Birds towers, Angry Birds in Space is a great re-fresh of a formula that was becoming slightly “meh”. If you are already an Angry Birds addict, then no doubt you will love Angry Birds in Space. If you aren’t a fan, give Angry Birds in Space as it offers a unique spin on the tried and tested Angry Birds formula that might win you over.

In the words of the developer:

The #1 mobile game of all time blasts off into space!
ALL NEW ANGRY BIRDS GAME FROM ROVIO -- the #1 mobile game of all time blasts off into space!
After a giant claw kidnaps their eggs, the Angry Birds chase it into a wormhole and find themselves floating in a strange new galaxy – surrounded by space pigs! Luckily the Angry Birds have super powers of their own...

Google Tasks Organizer

Today’s fourth app of the day is Google Tasks Organizer.

There are plenty of task organizers and lists available for the android platform, but for me I look for three primary features when choosing my task list of choice. They are:

1.       The organiser must have a good widget;
2.       The organiser must have Google Task integration;
3.       The organiser should preferably, be free.

Google Tasks Organizer ticks all these boxes. The Lite version features a great variety of widgets, from a single tile to a full screen, and can be heavily customised with varying font sizes, toolbar sizes, button sizes, etc. It syncs seamlessly with Google Tasks, and finally is free. The downside of the free version is that a few random tasks (in the form of advertisements) get added over time, but these are unobtrusive and few and far between.

All in all, Google Tasks Organizer is a great task organiser, well worth the install for those who like to keep organised!

In the words of the developer:

Get your Google Task lists organized on your phone with this customizable app.
Organize all your Google Task lists!
Sync your todo lists from multiple GMail and Google Apps accounts with one app.
Sort tasks by due date, name, custom order, and more.
Repeating tasks move to the next due date.
Set reminders for time-sensitive tasks.
Integrates with Executive Assistant app & widget.

Go Locker

Today’s fifth and final android app of the day is Go Locker.

Go Locker will not be much use to you if you do not have Go Locker Ex installed as your default launcher, but, if, you do have Go Launcher Ex installed and running, then Go Locker is a great addition to your phone.

Essentially, Go Locker allows you to customise the lock screen on your android device. There are plenty of great themes to chose from, and unlike all other lock replacements I have tried, it is completely bug-free and integrates 100% smoothly into the Go Launcher Ex experience.

I am personally using an ICS lock screen on my HTC Desire HD, and with over a month of use have ran into no problems. All in all, if you already use Go Launcher Ex (which I recommend for everyone), then Go Locker is a logical install.

In the words of the developer:

GO Locker design to GO Launcher EX is the most simple locker for Android!
Big News!!! GO Locker Theme Template has released!
