Since the earliest days of video games, pong has been a classic staple of any gaming system. Originally released in 1972 by Atari, the game is still surprisingly satisfying, largely due to the simplistic gaming mechanisms, yet a real reliance on skill rather than luck.

Today's app of the day is WhenDidI.

If you are the type of person who likes keeping track of things in your life, then WhenDidI is the app for you. You can log pretty much anything you want with WhenDidI, whether it be the last time you had a haircut, when you walked the dog, how much you have been spending on lunch, Petrol expenditure, etc. If you can measure or track it, then it can be inserted and recorded in WhenDidI.

Break the Ice!

Today's app of the day is Break the Ice!

In the interests of full disclosure, it is necessary for me to admit that I am married, so my experience with this app (for the purposes of creating this review), is entirely theoretical! That aside, in my brief time using the app, whilst thinking back to my single years, it was easy to see that Break the Ice has lots of potential!

Hungry Slimes

Today's app of the day is Hungry Slimes.

Hungry Slimes is a unique new game from Annahid Games which offers something a bit different for fans of physics based puzzlers to experience. The game play is simple, yet challenging enough to keep you coming back for more.

Maluuba - Do Engine

Today's app of the day is Maluuba - Do Engine.

I have recommend a number of apps in the past as Android alternatives to Siri. However, those recommendations were before 'Google Now'. I will imagine in the future, as Google Now enabled devices become more prevalent that Android users will begin to utilise voice recognition / virtual assistant software in a far more prominent manner.

Turbo Kids

Today's app of the day is Turbo Kids.

Turbo Kids is a free game (though packed with micro-transactions), which sees you competing in a number of races against a group of 'turbo kids'. There are a variety of game modes, but the core premise sees all the kids starting in relatively the same position, then competing in a race to the finish line.

Swing Shot

Today's app of the day is Swing Shot.

I think the best way to describe Swing Shot would be as follows - A comnbination of Angry Birds and Worms, in that the basic game mechanic involves launching (sling shot style) projectiles at an opponent's 'fort', but that after every shot the opponent gets to launch back and attack your fort. The last 'fort' standing wins.

Agent Dash

Today's app of the day is Agent Dash.

It is a reality of mobile gaming, that once a good idea exists, it will be replicated and improved on 100s of time within  a short space of the initial release. Agent Dash is one such 'copy' with the game being unabashedly copying many aspects of Temple Run.

Instead of swiping left and right to turn left or right, in Agent Dash you swipe left or right to change lanes, then the lanes determine the direction you turn as corners approach. There are a few 'power-ups' built in such as extra lives and jetpacks, but the basic gameplay is identical to what you would have already experienced with Temple Run.

This does not mean in is inferior. In fact, in almost every way the developer has taken Temple Run and tried to improve it. Want better graphics? Want a bit more 'character' in your, well, characters? Want some more variety in the landscapes through which you run? If the answer to these questions is 'Yes', then you will love Agent Dash.

The game replies heavily on micro-transactions, which is fine because the base package is free! As with all these sort of games go ahead and buy them if you want, but to date I have yet to feel they are necessary. I am more than happy to just keep on running (or should I say 'dashing') and see how far I can get! A great android game, worthy of an install on any smartphone.

If you are a fan of audio books, it makes sense to have an easy way to listen to them on your Android device. Of course, you can always download them on your PC and transfer them to your phone, but this can be a fiddly process, and also involves using your phones built in media player, which often isn't ideal for audio books (particularly when it comes to saving your place). Audio books can also be large. If your device is limited on storage, it will only take a book or 2 before you are out of room.

The objective in Archery is simple. You have 20 arrows to try and get the highest score. Simply launch your arrows, and after every shot the target will move making you have to re-align your shot. That's pretty much it! Simply, but good for a quick challenge!

Cloudy

Today's app of the day is Cloudy.

Cloudy is a classic mobile gaming experience, with a user interface and level structure replicating games like Angry Birds, Shoot the Apple, Cut the Rope, etc. The actual game play is quite unique, and involves throwing a paper plane in a manner to collect stars, whilst avoiding clouds.

You change the course of your plane by dragging a dotted path, using a few solid "anchor points" from which to manipulate the angles. As with most of these type of games, they sound abstract when described on paper, but are incredibly simple when played in practice.

There are 50 levels in this version of the game, which start off very simple, but before even the first 10 are up, become quite complicated. With more levels to be released, this is well worth checking out.

Today's app of the day is Jetpack Joyride.

Jetpack Joyride, the incredibly popular iOS game from Halfbrick studios has now made it's way onto Android Devices (through the Amazon Appstore). In Jetpack Joyride, you suit up and then begin a side scrolling one touch quest to collect coins. The one touch control scheme works brilliantly, with a finger on the screen controlling the burst of fuel form your jetpack (and hence altering your height). 

As you scroll down the level, trying to break your new personal best for distance, you will encounter electricity beams, coins (for collecting). evil scientists and a variety of other obstacles. As with all Halfbrick games, the graphics and sound are great, and the gameplay is addictive. This is one of my new favourite games, so check it out!
