FaceApp - despite the controversy there's a reason it is popular!

FaceApp is high in the ranks of then Google Play store at the moment, and despite the controversies of white-washing, there's a reason. In short, it's really fun, simple to use and an all round well-designed app that has some great filters and effects.
The purpose of the app is simple - simply load it up, take a photo, play with a few dials and then before you know it there's your desired outcome - whether it be a new gender, a younger self, an older self - etc. You name it - FaceApp can do it.
Check it out today, it's one of those apps well worth downloading and spending a few minutes with!

Flight Gear

Today's app of the day is Flight Gear.

If you are a pilot (or somehow otherwise involved in the aviation industry), then an app such as Flight Gear is bound to be useful! I am sure that there is a time and a place for highly calibrated, expensive aviation gadgetry, but with the ability to replace all those tools for the price of a coffee, you really cannot go wrong!

In the spirit of full disclosure, the closest I have got to being behind the wheel of a flying machine was standing in a cockpit of a 747 when air stewards use to allow small kids to talk to the pilots for a few seconds on long haul flights (back in a more innocent age). What this means is I have absolutely no idea what most of the tools within Flight Gear actually do. Regardless, if they perform as they say on the packaging, then the developer has surely kicked a home goal with this app.

What I can tell you, is that the app looks and appears to work wonderfully. I have not tested this in the air, but if the screen shots and videos are anything to go by, I can imagine it being a pocket companion for any pilot. The user interface is smooth and practical, loading times are non-existent, and everything simply appears to work as it should.

In terms of the actual features, this app is packed to the brim. The developer has explained them in greater detail below (see the developer description), but included is:

 -          Altitude indicator
-          Heading indicator
-          Weigh and balance calculator
-          ATC playback
-          CG Off-Limits warning system
-          Fuel Timers
-          Flight Timers
-          Wind correction calculators
-          Cross wind calculators
-          Pressure convertors
-          Volume Convertors
-          Speed Convertors
-          True Airspeed Convertor
-          Auto ATC Notepad.

What is apparent about all these features is that they really utilise every last bit of hardware your phone has to offer, such as gyroscopes, accelerometers, magnetometer, voice to text functionality and much more. It is also apparent the app is highly configurable, with the ability to input details about your exact type of aircraft and airport.

All in all, this is an excellent android app, which the developer has obviously put a lot of hard work into creating and updating. If you got wings, get Flight Gear!

In the words of the developer:

Flight Gear brings together key flight tools and flight instruments such as the Attitude Indicator, Heading Indicator, Weight and Balance Calculator (center of gravity), Fuel Timer and more! Instead of having to haul around multiple flight tools such as an E6B whiz-wheel, separate flight timer, fuel timer, etc, you can simply use this app for all your pre-flight and in-flight calculations/needs. You'll also have a set of backup flight instruments to rely on in case your onboard avionics ever malfunction.

***NOW WITH AIRPORT FACILITY DIRECTORIES. Access information that the FAA publishes about airports all over the US WITHOUT a data/internet connection. You can search the Airport Facility Directory by Airport Name, Airport City, Airport ID, or Navigation Point Name. You MUST have a PDF reader such as Adobe Reader installed to view airport information.*** FEATURES:- Attitude Indicator. Uses the internal gyroscope/accelerometer to calculate your aircraft's position relative to the ground (Accurate to within a 1 degree variation).
- Heading Indicator. Uses the internal magnetometer to calculate compass heading.
- Photo-realistic graphics to help blur the line between your real cockpit flight instruments and the app's simulated flight instruments.
- Weight and Balance Calculator (center of gravity). Save, edit, and delete multiple aircraft/registrations. Save your basic parameters (center of gravity limits, empty weight, empty moment, etc) to the onboard database to avoid having to re-enter them the next time you fly. Variable parameters such as weight and arm length can be edited for each calculation.
- ATC Playback. Connect your device to your radio stack to record conversations between ATC and you. You can then replay those conversations from the app at your own discretion.
- CG Off-Limits Warning System. The CG value automatically starts flashing against a bright red background to warn you when your aircraft is out of its CG limits. The gross weight is also calculated simultaneously and starts flashing when your aircraft is over its max takeoff weight.
- Fuel timer. Simply enter your fuel capacity, current fuel amount and the rate of fuel burn and the app will start a countdown timer for how much flying time you have left. Also includes a 30min warning and "Fuel Empty" alert.
- Flight timer that runs in the background even if you close the app or turn off your device. Includes Zulu time.
- Central dashboard with attitude indicator, heading, fuel timer, and flight timer all on one screen.
- Wind Correction Angle Calculator
- Crosswind Calculator
- Pressure Converter
- Distance converter (nautical miles, miles, kilometers).
- Volume converter (gallons and liters). Also converts volume of fuel (Jet A, Jet A-1, AVGAS 100LL) to weight (lbs and kgs) and vice-versa.
- Speed converter (knots, miles per hour, kilometers per hour).
- True Airspeed Converter. Enter your indicated airspeed and current altitude to get the commonly used 2% estimate.
- Auto ATC Notepad (BETA). Simply hit the record button when you receive a call from ATC and everything you read back to them will be transcribed onto your device. While this feature does currently work, it is still in beta and the voice recognition system may not recognize all aviation terms. An update will be released periodically to improve accuracy as developments are made.

Wish - shopping made fun - and easy - and cheap!

These days sites like Amazon or eBay make buying and selling online quick and easy. Unfortunately, sometimes the sheer breadth of products available (everything on earth!) makes it difficult to impulse buy or get the same experience one haves when wandering around a shop or past windows. Luckily, apps now exist to replicate that experience.

The best of the lot is Wish - which has the tagline 'shopping made fun' which could not be more true! When opening the app there are lots of categories to choose from, allowing you to pick the type of products you want to browse and going from there. Buying and checking out is only ever a few clicks away and if you are not careful you will very quickly load up on more products than you need!

I've launched sites that help out with buying cheap gadgets in the past, and it was heavily inspired by apps such as Wish which really allow someone to sit back and take pleasure in the shopping experience again! Download Wish now!

Cosmic Cow

Today's app of the day is Cosmic Cow.

"Endless" games are very in vogue at the moment, whether it be endless running, endless jumping or endless flapping, there are plenty of ways to get unlimited, and challenging gaming fixes. That doesn't mean that there aren't great new games being created in the genre, with Cosmic Cow being one such example.

In essence, Cosmic Cow combines two great styles of game play, one being a side scrolling endless-type game, and the other being the classic side scrolling space ship shooter, popularised in numerous incarnations on 8 and 16 bit consoles of decades past. As a "cosmic cow" (can't help but love it!), the player has to navigate through space, shooting or dodging asteroids and other attacking spaceships. The cow can collect a variety of objects to earn points - though mainly interesting foods that just happen to be floating through space. As points are accumulated, the player can also collect coins to spend on a v…
