Microsoft is actually a great Android developer - 'To-Do' is another reason why!

It may seem suprising to some, but Microsoft is actually a fantastic Android developer. In fact, I'd go as far to saythat their app offerings for Android are far superior to than their offerings for the Windows App store. For starters the full suite of Microsoft Office apps are great, as is one drive and one note, and the Arrow App Launcher is actually one of the best custom android skins available (seriously - check it out!).

To round this out, over the last few days Microsoft has released 'To-Do' which as you've guessed it - is a to-do list. It really could not be simpler - the app allows the creation of lists and then as part of each list allows tasks and items to be added.

The design is simple and clean, and a nice move away from the boxy interface design that still dominates some of the earlier Windows apps for android. It's fast, lightweight, cloud based (of course) and has a widget - so there is not much more you could ask for!

Of course there is lots of co…

Sweep Texting

Today's app of the day is Sweep Texting.

Sweep Texting is the second application by developer Flight Gear that I have recommended on Droid App of the Day, and their run of quality apps continues.

Sweep Texting takes a simple concept and executes it with near perfection. In short, Swipe Texting serves as a simple pop up notification system for SMS messages you receive on your Android device. What makes it stand apart from the competition, is that instead of having to drag down press buttons to cause the notification to appear, a user simply needs to swipe their hand in front of the device - in the air - with no contact on the screen.

Sounds strange at first, but it is incredibly intuitive. Once the notification box is open, it is a simple task to reply to the message, view it in full, or hide it to be responded to later (i.e. keeping it in the notification panel). FInally, there are plenty of customisations, meaning the look and feel of the app can be entirely to your suiting.

With the new focus on motion controls in devices (the S3 and the Note II for example) it is only a matter of time before  customisations such as this will become more of a standard feature on many devices. If you can't wait for the action, I strongly recommend you give Sweep Texting a try!

In the words of the developer:

Tired of switching to your messaging app every time you need to view or reply to a text message? Sweep Texting allows you to view your incoming text messages within the app that you're currently using. Simply sweep your hand down over your device's screen (without touching it!) and a dialog will pop up with your most recent text message. You can reply to the message on the spot and when you're done, simply sweep your hand up over your device's screen to send it!

The idea here is intuitive: You wave your hand down as though you're giving permission for the text message to "come" to you and display itself. Once you're done, you can wave your hand up as though you're commanding your text message to "go away" (and send your reply).
--Sweep down to view a text message after it arrives.
--Sweep up to send your reply back to whoever you're texting.
--Supports multiple messages from multiple senders.
--Supports messages longer than one message.
--Tap on your message to go directly to your Inbox.
--Shake your device (when the dialog is open) to have your phone read your message out loud.
--Choose between Holo styled (ICS only) or five different dialog colors.
--Choose between five different text balloon colors.
--Disable in Landscape Mode toggle.
--Toggle to enable/disable "Message Sent" sound.
--Enable/Disable toggle so you can turn off the app's features when you don't need it.

Sweep Texting only works with ***carrier texting*** (ATT, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc). That means that if you use a 3rd party texting service such as Google Voice or Text Free, it won't work.

IMPORTANT: Sweep Texting works best when used in portrait mode. Using the app in landscape mode may cause your hand to accidentally activate the app (due to the proximity sensor's position on the phone). You can disable the sweeping gesture in landscape mode by checking the "Disable in Landscape mode" option. However, if you really want to use it landscape mode, make sure that you hold your phone with the proximity sensor positioned *above* where you would normally place your hands. You can find your proximity sensor by looking for a small black or gray circle next to the earpiece.

Wish - shopping made fun - and easy - and cheap!

These days sites like Amazon or eBay make buying and selling online quick and easy. Unfortunately, sometimes the sheer breadth of products available (everything on earth!) makes it difficult to impulse buy or get the same experience one haves when wandering around a shop or past windows. Luckily, apps now exist to replicate that experience.

The best of the lot is Wish - which has the tagline 'shopping made fun' which could not be more true! When opening the app there are lots of categories to choose from, allowing you to pick the type of products you want to browse and going from there. Buying and checking out is only ever a few clicks away and if you are not careful you will very quickly load up on more products than you need!

I've launched sites that help out with buying cheap gadgets in the past, and it was heavily inspired by apps such as Wish which really allow someone to sit back and take pleasure in the shopping experience again! Download Wish now!

Hearthstone - better late than never - the best android card game!

I'll cut to it - Hearthstone is one of the best games you can get for your Android device - in fact, I am sure that plenty of people would argue it is one of the best games you can get at all - even on a PC! With that in mind, there's no reason not to jump in now and start experiencing this great offering from Blizzard.
The gameplay is turn based card strategy, think Magic the Gathering, but fare more simple. Every turn the number of points you have to spend on cards increases, so it means that games start quite evenly handed but can escalate quickly, especially when more experienced players know how to string together the abilities of their cards.
The objective is to eliminate the health of your opponent - and once you succeed the victory is entirely satisfying, with some truly fantastic sounds and effects that drive home the sense of achievement. This is of course a free to play game, and it is possible to spend real world money in the store but it is not required to have …
