Microsoft is actually a great Android developer - 'To-Do' is another reason why!

It may seem suprising to some, but Microsoft is actually a fantastic Android developer. In fact, I'd go as far to saythat their app offerings for Android are far superior to than their offerings for the Windows App store. For starters the full suite of Microsoft Office apps are great, as is one drive and one note, and the Arrow App Launcher is actually one of the best custom android skins available (seriously - check it out!).

To round this out, over the last few days Microsoft has released 'To-Do' which as you've guessed it - is a to-do list. It really could not be simpler - the app allows the creation of lists and then as part of each list allows tasks and items to be added.

The design is simple and clean, and a nice move away from the boxy interface design that still dominates some of the earlier Windows apps for android. It's fast, lightweight, cloud based (of course) and has a widget - so there is not much more you could ask for!

Of course there is lots of co…

Lekiosk - Newsstand Magazine

Today's app of the day is Lekiosk - Newsstand Magazine.

There are plenty of ways to read on your Android and iOS devices these days. Whether it be through apps such as Flipboard or Feedly, through 'store it later' apps such as Pocket or Instapaper, or simply by browsing the web. However, no such reading experience on a tablet can quite match the experience of picking up a magazine and physically browsing through the pages.

It's not just the act of reading that is better with magazines, but also the quality of the journalism, which unfortunately is missing from a lot of the news and entertainment sources that are often read online. The depth and quality of articles just often isn't there.

A lengthy intro I know, but the point is to introduce a fantastic new Android and iOS app that is trying to bridge that gap between physical and digitial reading experiences through the creation of a virtual newsstand. That app is Lekiosk, and thus far it has proved to be one of the best reading experiences I have had on my Android device (and my wife loves it on her iPad if anyone was in doubt about the porting between the two platforms).

What immediately separates Lekiosk apart from the competition is the manner in which magazines are actually browsed, previewed and eventually downloaded. The browsing part is particularly impressive. Although a standard text /grid based library can be used, the read star is the 3D virtual kiosk which can easily be browsed with the flick of a finger. The animations are fantastic and it really is the closest you will get to browsing through an actual store on your tablet. Trust me, it will impress even the harshest cynic immediately.

Once a magazine has been chosen it can be previewed for free, or downloaded in full. The prices here will really blow you away, and Lekiosk offers packs of magazines, for example 10 for 10 pounds, which will be impossible to beat in any physical store. The range is also fantastic, featuring everything from womens interests, techs, home and gardens, sport, science, etc. The list goes on (check out the second screen shot below)!

Once a magazine is downloaded (and this is managed in a nice graphical library), the actual reading kicks in. Pages flick realistically, and the quality of the magazines themselves are high, showing up crisply on the HD displays of most new tablets. Zooming is easily achieved through multi-touch pinch and zoom, or simply by double tapping. I went as far as installing this on my phone, and even with the smaller screen I still found the interface quite easy to manage.

All in all, this is an excellent Android application (and iOS application), and one that I know I will spending a lot of time with over the coming months. The range is fantastic, the price is right and the overall build quality is flawless. Check it out!

Wish - shopping made fun - and easy - and cheap!

These days sites like Amazon or eBay make buying and selling online quick and easy. Unfortunately, sometimes the sheer breadth of products available (everything on earth!) makes it difficult to impulse buy or get the same experience one haves when wandering around a shop or past windows. Luckily, apps now exist to replicate that experience.

The best of the lot is Wish - which has the tagline 'shopping made fun' which could not be more true! When opening the app there are lots of categories to choose from, allowing you to pick the type of products you want to browse and going from there. Buying and checking out is only ever a few clicks away and if you are not careful you will very quickly load up on more products than you need!

I've launched sites that help out with buying cheap gadgets in the past, and it was heavily inspired by apps such as Wish which really allow someone to sit back and take pleasure in the shopping experience again! Download Wish now!

Hearthstone - better late than never - the best android card game!

I'll cut to it - Hearthstone is one of the best games you can get for your Android device - in fact, I am sure that plenty of people would argue it is one of the best games you can get at all - even on a PC! With that in mind, there's no reason not to jump in now and start experiencing this great offering from Blizzard.
The gameplay is turn based card strategy, think Magic the Gathering, but fare more simple. Every turn the number of points you have to spend on cards increases, so it means that games start quite evenly handed but can escalate quickly, especially when more experienced players know how to string together the abilities of their cards.
The objective is to eliminate the health of your opponent - and once you succeed the victory is entirely satisfying, with some truly fantastic sounds and effects that drive home the sense of achievement. This is of course a free to play game, and it is possible to spend real world money in the store but it is not required to have …
