FaceApp - despite the controversy there's a reason it is popular!

FaceApp is high in the ranks of then Google Play store at the moment, and despite the controversies of white-washing, there's a reason. In short, it's really fun, simple to use and an all round well-designed app that has some great filters and effects.
The purpose of the app is simple - simply load it up, take a photo, play with a few dials and then before you know it there's your desired outcome - whether it be a new gender, a younger self, an older self - etc. You name it - FaceApp can do it.
Check it out today, it's one of those apps well worth downloading and spending a few minutes with!

Today's app of the day is Str8ts.

If you are a fan of Suduko or other logic based puzzle games, then Str8ts is well worth checking out. However, if you are reading this and thinking "Suduko - meh - been there done that" then don't judge too soon, because the similarities between between the two games are greater than their differences. The outcome is a fantastic logic based puzzle game that stands up on its own two feet against the best in field, well worth checking out. With St8ts now making it's way to the Android platform, there has never been a better time to grab your phone and give your brain a work out.

Developed in 2008, the game derives its name from the poker straight, with the straight being a fundamental element of gameplay. Quoting from Wikipedia:

The solver is given a 9x9 grid, partially divided by black cells into compartments. Each compartment, vertically or horizontally, must contain a straight - a set of consecutive numbers, but in any order. For example: 7, 6, 4, 5 is valid, but 1, 3, 8, 7 is not.

Like sudoku, the solver must fill the remaining white cells with numbers 1 to 9 (or 1 to n in puzzles with N cells per side) such that each row and column contains unique digits. Whereas Sudoku has the additional constraint of 3x3 boxes, in Str8ts rows and columns are divided by additional clues are set in some of the black cells - these numbers remove that digit as an option in the row and column. Such digits do not form part of any straight.

In terms of execution, Str8ts is superb. The menus are simple and intuitive, the controls are straight-forward and take only seconds to learn, and the graphics (such as the numbered shells) look crisp and perfectly contrasted. For those who are put off by the learning curve on puzzle games, don't fear. Str8ts features both a great "Rules" menu which explains the rules through text and images. If that isn't enough there is also an interactive tutorial which explains all aspects of the game in a fully interactive, hands on manner. I had the game well understood after these two exercises, but luckily, the strategy and some minor nuances of the game gradually became apparent on actual play-through which was very rewarding.

With loading times non-existent, over 30 puzzles to play in the lite version of the game (and 1000 in the full!), the automatic transfer of lite games to the full version on upgrade, and many more great features, it really is a no-brainer to download Str8ts and give it a try! All in all, an excellent Android game.

In the words of the developer:

Overplayed Sudoku? Try Str8ts - the best new number puzzle game.

Str8ts is a number puzzle that is easy to learn, has simple rules, requires no math skills and is addictive as Sudoku. Few puzzles have the amount of depth and variety as Str8ts. You are encouraged to find multiple solving techniques and you progress between different levels of difficulties.Like Sudoku you need to place numbers uniquely in each row and column. But the dark blue cells add a new dimension. These divide the rows and columns into compartments which work like a poker hand - you have to make sure the numbers are like a 'straight', like 5,6,7 and 8 - but they can be in any order.

There are clues to start you off and ensure the puzzle has just one solution. The clues in dark blue cells rule out that number in the row and column and can't be used as part of a straight. For this app we've splashed out on smart functionality, easy to use controls, help and an app tutorial, cool graphics and plenty of puzzles. All the puzzles created for this game were made by Andrew Stuart, who has published puzzles in many newspapers around the world.Only limitation of Str8ts Lite is that it contains 10
puzzles on 3 difficulty levels.Features of Str8ts:

- 250 puzzles on each of the 4 levels of difficulty.
- unlimited depth of undo/redo actions persisted between gameplays.
- two modes of entering a 'note' or a solution value.
- best solution time stored for every puzzle.
- step by step live tutorial explaining how to play the Str8ts App.
- Rules and Controls screens explaining how to play Str8ts and how to use the app.

Puzzles solved in Str8ts Lite will be automatically transferred to Str8ts (once this is done Str8ts Lite can be safely uninstalled)Str8ts was successfully pitched by Jeff Widderich on Dragon's Den Canada (Season 5, Episode 8) and three dragons wanted to make a deal. Keywords: sudoku, puzzle, puzzles, dragon's den, logic game, numeric game, numeric puzzle, number-placement, sudoku

Wish - shopping made fun - and easy - and cheap!

These days sites like Amazon or eBay make buying and selling online quick and easy. Unfortunately, sometimes the sheer breadth of products available (everything on earth!) makes it difficult to impulse buy or get the same experience one haves when wandering around a shop or past windows. Luckily, apps now exist to replicate that experience.

The best of the lot is Wish - which has the tagline 'shopping made fun' which could not be more true! When opening the app there are lots of categories to choose from, allowing you to pick the type of products you want to browse and going from there. Buying and checking out is only ever a few clicks away and if you are not careful you will very quickly load up on more products than you need!

I've launched sites that help out with buying cheap gadgets in the past, and it was heavily inspired by apps such as Wish which really allow someone to sit back and take pleasure in the shopping experience again! Download Wish now!

Cosmic Cow

Today's app of the day is Cosmic Cow.

"Endless" games are very in vogue at the moment, whether it be endless running, endless jumping or endless flapping, there are plenty of ways to get unlimited, and challenging gaming fixes. That doesn't mean that there aren't great new games being created in the genre, with Cosmic Cow being one such example.

In essence, Cosmic Cow combines two great styles of game play, one being a side scrolling endless-type game, and the other being the classic side scrolling space ship shooter, popularised in numerous incarnations on 8 and 16 bit consoles of decades past. As a "cosmic cow" (can't help but love it!), the player has to navigate through space, shooting or dodging asteroids and other attacking spaceships. The cow can collect a variety of objects to earn points - though mainly interesting foods that just happen to be floating through space. As points are accumulated, the player can also collect coins to spend on a v…
