Microsoft is actually a great Android developer - 'To-Do' is another reason why!

It may seem suprising to some, but Microsoft is actually a fantastic Android developer. In fact, I'd go as far to saythat their app offerings for Android are far superior to than their offerings for the Windows App store. For starters the full suite of Microsoft Office apps are great, as is one drive and one note, and the Arrow App Launcher is actually one of the best custom android skins available (seriously - check it out!).

To round this out, over the last few days Microsoft has released 'To-Do' which as you've guessed it - is a to-do list. It really could not be simpler - the app allows the creation of lists and then as part of each list allows tasks and items to be added.

The design is simple and clean, and a nice move away from the boxy interface design that still dominates some of the earlier Windows apps for android. It's fast, lightweight, cloud based (of course) and has a widget - so there is not much more you could ask for!

Of course there is lots of co…

The Room

Today's app of the day is The Room

There is no point beating around the bush - The Room is hands down, one of the best mobile gaming experiences you can have. If you do nothing else today, scroll down to the bottom of the page, scan the QR code and download this game immediately. Find a quiet corner, pencil out 2 - 3 hours in your diary and truly sink into a fantastic gaming experience.

With that out of the way, I can go back to basics and tell you a little about The Room. The story starts in a dark room with a cabinet standing in the middle. You open a box and read a letter. From there, you are on your own, the challenge being to essentially 'crack open' the cabinet standing in the middle of the room and to reveal the mysteries of its creator.

This is no mean feat though, and involves some of the best puzzling seen on a mobile device to date. As you progress you will slide levels, decipher visual clues, manipulate keys, build gears, set up film projectors and much more. The skill level increases gradually, but never feels impossible. Not once did I 'rage quit' as the game conveniently offers you hints to help when you are stuck. For the best feeling of satisfaction though, I' suggest keeping their use to a minimum. There is really no better feeling then the visual of a lever turning or the satisfying clunk of a key sliding into a slot after being stuck on a puzzle for a long period of time.

The puzzles themselves are aided by brilliant implementation of touch controls. Not once did I feel like I had to battle with the controls. Instead, moving around the screen and enacting actions was intuitive and simple. This  sense of simplicity is aided by a brilliant soundtrack which bubbles below the surface. For a game that predominately involves rotating wooden boxes, the soundtrack ads a level of emotion and anticipation on par with AAA console titles.

Finally the graphics of The Room are incredible, featuring an amazing level of detail. The realism of the cases that you open and of the inventory items you collect is unparalleled on a mobile device. In many ways, the graphics surpass what you would see on many downloadable titles from the PSN or X-Box Live.

All in all, this is a fantastic little package. The play time might be a little short, but the price is right, and the level of ingenuity that has gone into this game will leave you feeling satisfied and wanting more - which is always a distinct possibility with mobile games! If you download one game today, this month, or even this year, make it The Room.

In the words of the developer:

Wish - shopping made fun - and easy - and cheap!

These days sites like Amazon or eBay make buying and selling online quick and easy. Unfortunately, sometimes the sheer breadth of products available (everything on earth!) makes it difficult to impulse buy or get the same experience one haves when wandering around a shop or past windows. Luckily, apps now exist to replicate that experience.

The best of the lot is Wish - which has the tagline 'shopping made fun' which could not be more true! When opening the app there are lots of categories to choose from, allowing you to pick the type of products you want to browse and going from there. Buying and checking out is only ever a few clicks away and if you are not careful you will very quickly load up on more products than you need!

I've launched sites that help out with buying cheap gadgets in the past, and it was heavily inspired by apps such as Wish which really allow someone to sit back and take pleasure in the shopping experience again! Download Wish now!

Hearthstone - better late than never - the best android card game!

I'll cut to it - Hearthstone is one of the best games you can get for your Android device - in fact, I am sure that plenty of people would argue it is one of the best games you can get at all - even on a PC! With that in mind, there's no reason not to jump in now and start experiencing this great offering from Blizzard.
The gameplay is turn based card strategy, think Magic the Gathering, but fare more simple. Every turn the number of points you have to spend on cards increases, so it means that games start quite evenly handed but can escalate quickly, especially when more experienced players know how to string together the abilities of their cards.
The objective is to eliminate the health of your opponent - and once you succeed the victory is entirely satisfying, with some truly fantastic sounds and effects that drive home the sense of achievement. This is of course a free to play game, and it is possible to spend real world money in the store but it is not required to have …
