Microsoft is actually a great Android developer - 'To-Do' is another reason why!

It may seem suprising to some, but Microsoft is actually a fantastic Android developer. In fact, I'd go as far to saythat their app offerings for Android are far superior to than their offerings for the Windows App store. For starters the full suite of Microsoft Office apps are great, as is one drive and one note, and the Arrow App Launcher is actually one of the best custom android skins available (seriously - check it out!).

To round this out, over the last few days Microsoft has released 'To-Do' which as you've guessed it - is a to-do list. It really could not be simpler - the app allows the creation of lists and then as part of each list allows tasks and items to be added.

The design is simple and clean, and a nice move away from the boxy interface design that still dominates some of the earlier Windows apps for android. It's fast, lightweight, cloud based (of course) and has a widget - so there is not much more you could ask for!

Of course there is lots of co…

Contactive - Free Caller ID

Today's app of the day is Contactive.

With the wealth of apps, games and functions available on modern smartphones, it is often the core feature of a phone (making and receiving calls) that goes overlooked by developers.  In that, I mean that the actual keypad, address books and dial screens are often dull, difficult to navigate / use and do not utilize the full power of a modern android device.

Contactive is an attempt to change this, with a fresh take on the phone book (contact list), dial pad and incoming / outgoing call screens (amongst other things). At the heart of this application is the integration of social networks into your calling experience, allowing you to very easily browse a snapshot of a person, such as their last locations and updates, either as you have an incoming call or as you are browsing the address book.

Not only can this save you at times when you get a call and have a mental blank about who is getting in touch, but is also a great way of screening calls from unknown sources. If you get a call from a number outside of your phone book, Contactive will search for the number of the caller, and display you information about who is ringing (all whilst the call is incoming).

These features are just the tip of the iceberg. Other functions include the ability to sort your contacts into lists (or let Contactive do it 'out of the box') based on your social networks  browse through snapshots of friends social media updates and birthdays, or simply make calls. The user interface is fantastic, with crisp, clean colors and sharp lines. The app is also FAST!  I have tried other contact apps in the past and they can often take a few seconds to load a large list of contacts. Contactive is instance, which immediately makes it a hot choice for me.

At the end of the day, if you are frustrated with the lack of functionality of the stock android calling apps, or underwhelmed by HTC or Samsung skins, then check out Contactive. It is feature packed, looks great and is a worthy install on any device!

In the words of the developer:

Contactive unites the functionality of your address book with the knowledge of the Internet. It collects information from your social media networks, publicly available sources, and Contactive’s Global Directory to show who’s calling before you even answer the call.
▶ Identify hundreds of millions of unknown callers before picking up the call.
▶ Unify contact information from your social media networks for an address book that is updated in real-time.
▶ Always have something to talk about. Get a cheat sheet of your contacts’ latest updates in the moment that matters.
▶ Our growing list of sources include: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Gmail, Yelp, Google Places, White/Yellow Pages, and Contactive’s Global Directory
Contactive is based out of SoHo, New York City and is subsidiary of SingTel’s Digital L!fe Group. We are a small team of big brains made up of brilliant designers, marketing folk, and engineers who specialize in machine learning. Together, we’re working to replace phone numbers with meaningful pieces of our lives and to shape the future of mobile communications.

Wish - shopping made fun - and easy - and cheap!

These days sites like Amazon or eBay make buying and selling online quick and easy. Unfortunately, sometimes the sheer breadth of products available (everything on earth!) makes it difficult to impulse buy or get the same experience one haves when wandering around a shop or past windows. Luckily, apps now exist to replicate that experience.

The best of the lot is Wish - which has the tagline 'shopping made fun' which could not be more true! When opening the app there are lots of categories to choose from, allowing you to pick the type of products you want to browse and going from there. Buying and checking out is only ever a few clicks away and if you are not careful you will very quickly load up on more products than you need!

I've launched sites that help out with buying cheap gadgets in the past, and it was heavily inspired by apps such as Wish which really allow someone to sit back and take pleasure in the shopping experience again! Download Wish now!

Hearthstone - better late than never - the best android card game!

I'll cut to it - Hearthstone is one of the best games you can get for your Android device - in fact, I am sure that plenty of people would argue it is one of the best games you can get at all - even on a PC! With that in mind, there's no reason not to jump in now and start experiencing this great offering from Blizzard.
The gameplay is turn based card strategy, think Magic the Gathering, but fare more simple. Every turn the number of points you have to spend on cards increases, so it means that games start quite evenly handed but can escalate quickly, especially when more experienced players know how to string together the abilities of their cards.
The objective is to eliminate the health of your opponent - and once you succeed the victory is entirely satisfying, with some truly fantastic sounds and effects that drive home the sense of achievement. This is of course a free to play game, and it is possible to spend real world money in the store but it is not required to have …
